Public Engagement

The UCSC Department of Philosophy is committed to bringing philosophy to the public sphere. Our philosophers routinely publish op-eds, give interviews to international news media on philosophical topics, and author other communications aimed at the public. Examples include:

When Words are Stolen, Liberal Currents (Carolina Flores and Nico Orlandi, 2025)

Here’s why I am opting out of TSA facial recognition– and you should, too, San Francisco Chronicle (Lauren Lyons, 2024)

On Developing an Ear, Oxford Public Philosophy (JJ Dinishak, 2022)

Infinite Possibilities, Infinite Worlds, Institute of Art and Ideas (Daniel Nolan, 2021)

Are School Debate Competitions Bad for Our Political Discourse?, New York Times (Jonathan Ellis and Francesca Hovagimian, 2019)

Back to the Future Gets Time Travel Wrong. The Terminator Gets it Right, Slate (Sara Bernstein, 2018)
