Declaring the Philosophy major or minor:
To declare your major, visit the Undergraduate Advising Center (advising.ucsc.edu) Student section. You will find a form to download and instructions for completing the form. Please email to make an appointment, or bring the form by during drop-in hours.
Major and minor course requirements are listed below. You can download a PDF version of the 2007-08 Philosophy Undergraduate Handbook.
PLEASE NOTE: PHILOSOPHY MAJOR REQUIREMENTS AND PREREQUISITES WILL BE CHANGING IN 2008-09
Beginning in fall 2008, there will be important changes taking places to the undergraduate philosophy program. These changes will hopefully ensure that students are better prepared for their upper-division courses, and will also provide a means for philosophy undergrads to fulfill the W requirement within the major.
Eleven courses will still be required for the major, but the distribution requirements will be slightly different. Also, the prerequisites for some of our courses will be changing. The changes are highlighted below in red:
Introductory courses: As before, two courses are required; Phil 9, Introduction to Logic (course name will be changed next year to Symbolic Logic) and one other introductory course. The list of courses that will fulfill the second introductory course requirement has been expanded, and is now as follows: Phil 11, 22, 24, 28, or any 80 course.
History of Philosophy: As before, two of 91, 93, and 94 are required
What's new:
* Only two courses in the history of philosophy are required
* Taking any two of the 91, 93, 94 sequence will fulfill the W requirement (that is, each course is worth 1/2 of a W) Thus, by completing the philosophy major, you will have satisfied the W requirement. However, please note: This means that these courses will be smaller. However, this is NOT retroactive. These courses taken PRIOR to fall 2008 do NOT fulfill the W requirement.
* Students must complete BOTH introductory requirements before being eligible to enroll in ANY of the history of philosophy courses.
Upper Division (6 required)
Any six 5-unit courses numbered 100 and above (with the exception of 195A & B and 199) are required.
Before enrolling in ANY upper division course (that is, any course numbered above 100), students must have taken AT LEAST ONE of 91, 93, or 94.
Senior Seminar (1 required).
At least one course numbered 190 is required to fulfill the senior comprehensive requirement.
Remember: If you have already declared the major, you will follow the catalog rights from the year that you declared unless you request to have your requirement term changed.
If you have questions regarding the new requirements, fell free to email me at lmcshane@ucsc.edu; however, as noted above, I will be out of the office until May 19.

TRANSFER STUDENTS
Students can petition the department for credit in the major for
coursework done elsewhere. In general, equivalent introductory
courses in Philosophy
may be substituted for UC Santa Cruz Philosophy introductory
courses. The website www.assist.org has
information on which courses articulate for the major, but final
approval rests
with the department.
One equivalent upper-division course taken at another four-year
university may
also be substituted. Petitions are available outside
the Philosophy Department office (Stevenson 235) and must be submitted with a syllabus
and supporting material from the class. Only courses for which the student has received a B or
better grade will be accepted for the major.
For the Religious Thought Concentration, Phil 170 and 171 MUST be taken at UCSC.

HONORS IN THE MAJOR
Philosophy Department policy regarding honors in the major is as follows:
If a major has a GPA of 3.9 or better in Philosophy (for courses taken at UCSC), that student will receive highest honors.
If a major has a GPA of at least 3.8 but less than 3.9 in Philosophy (for courses taken at UCSC), then that student will, upon approval of a majority of the faculty, receive highest honors. (NB: A 3.8 GPA qualifies students here for the Dean's list.)
If a major has a GPA of at least 3.7 (but less than 3.9) in Philosophy (for courses taken at UCSC), then that student will receive honors.
If a major has a GPA below 3.7 and a faculty member believes that student should be considered for honors, then that faculty member must present the case to the department.
