Philosophy Graduate School Workshops October 15 and 19

The Philosophy Department will be offering two workshops to help you get through the grad school process. You'll learn what's involved in applying, what schools look for in applicants, and how to choose the right school. You'll have a chance to talk to philosophy faculty, ask them your questions, and hear about their experiences with grad school and the job search. Pizza will be provided.

If you wish to attend, you MUST RSVP by email to lmcshane@ucsc.edu or by phone at 459-2070. There are two meeting times available:

Monday, October 15 at noon, Stevenson 217
RSVP by 5 pm Friday, Oct. 12

Open House--UC Davis School of Law, October 13

UC Davis School of Law presents their OPEN HOUSE FOR PROSPECTIVE APPLICANTS this Saturday, October 13, from 9:30am-2:00pm. This event offers informational sessions on admission, financial aid, career services and clinics; faculty and student panels; and a student organization fair. Interested students are encouraged to RSVP early!

Important Deadline approaching--Add/Drop/Swap deadline is Oct. 17!
Be sure to check your enrollments before this date at https://my.ucsc.edu to make sure that you do not need to make any enrollment corrections. Do this even if you're sure your classes are correct!

If you miss the deadline to ADD and you've been attending the class, you can still file an Add by Petition with a $10 fee until Nov. 7. If you miss the deadline to DROP, the course will permanently appear on your record. You should be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits each quarter unless you are on the University Part-Time Program. See an adviser if you do not qualify for the University Part-Time Program but need to take less than 12 credits. To take more than 19 credits, you may enroll via the Student Portal if your cumulative GPA is 3.0 or above.


UCSC Graduate & Professional School Information Fair

The Career Center will hold their annual Graduate & Professional School Information Fair on Monday, October 15th at the Stevenson Event Center from 11:00 - 3:00. This is a chance to meet with representatives from various schools and find out more about their programs. Humanities Undergraduate Research Awards

The call for proposals for the 2007-8 Humanities Undergraduate Research Awards (HUGRA) has just been issued. There are ten awards ($500 each). Juniors and seniors are eligible to apply; they will need to provide a plan for a research project and a letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor. The deadline is Monday, November 5. 2008 Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics Essay Contest

The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity announces the 2008 Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics Essay Contest, an annual competition that is designed to challenge college students to analyze the urgent ethical issues confronting them in today's complex world. Juniors and seniors are encouraged to write thought-provoking personal essays that raise questions, single out issues and are rational arguments for ethical issues.

The five finalists win a combined prize of $10,000 and win an all-expense paid trip to New York City where they received their awards and meet Elie Wiesel. The submission deadline is December 7, 2007.

University of California, UC Washington Center (UCDC)

Participate in an exciting program of internship and study in Washington, D.C. UCDC participants attend classes and have an internship placement in Washington while registered as UCSC students, earning academic credit for the courses taken.

DePauw University Undergraduate Ethics Symposium--Call for Essays

DePauw University (Indiana) is hosting its inaugural Prindle Institute of Ethics, April 3-5, 2008. The Institute fosters interdisciplinary reflection on moral issues, including questions of justice and public policy, character, duty, and responsibility. The Undergraduate Ethics Symposium is designed to encourage undergraduate scholarship and artistic work. This symposium is an outstanding opportunity for student scholars and artists to discuss their ethics-related work with leading scholar/artists in their fields and to participate in a significant discussion of ethical concerns.

The Institute invites students to submit papers on various topics in ethics. Funding is available for travel from The Prindle Institute. The submission deadline is February 1, 2008. University of California Public Policy & International Affairs Fellowship Program

The UC Public Policy & International Affairs (UCPPIA) Fellowship Program is an incredible opportunity for undergraduates who are interested in public policy, international affairs and law and who are thinking about going on to graduate school.

Counseling and Psychological Services--Resources for Students

If you're struggling with personal or emotional issues, help is available. CPS provides UCSC students with a wide range of mental health services, including short-term individual and couples counseling, group counseling, crisis assessment and intervention, and referral services. Counseling services are confidential and available free of charge to all registered UCSC students. To schedule a first appointment, visit or call the CPS Central Office at the Cowell Student Health Center; at that time, you will be informed about the location of your therapist.
