Philosophy Students win Deans' & Chancellor's Awards

June 16, 2009

Each year fifty undergraduates (10 from each of the academic divisions on campus) are selected from a wide pool of applicants to receive the Dean's Award for outstanding achievement in their division. Applicants typically submit a paper or project and must have the support of a faculty sponsor to be considered. Each Deans' Award winner receives a $100 prize, and is also considered for the Chancellor's Award, which is given to the top 3 Deans' Award recipients from each division. All award recipients are also honored at a ceremony and their names will be announced at graduation.

The Philosophy Department is proud to congratulate the following two Philosophy majors who received these awards:

Brian Ballard received the Dean's Award for his project titled, "Naturalism and Moral Skepticism." His project was sponsored and supported by Professor Ric Otte of the Philosophy Department.

Heather Mahan received the Dean's Award for her project titled, "Nietzsche, Needs and Necessity." Her paper was also selected to win one of the prestigious Chancellor's Awards. Professor Jocelyn Hoy of the Philosophy Department was Heather's supportive faculty sponsor.

Congratulations to these outstanding students!
