Admissions
Students admitted to the Ph.D. or M.A. program in philosophy are expected to present evidence of outstanding achievement during their undergraduate education. Ordinarily students will have completed a B.A. in Philosophy, although many of the best philosophers received their undergraduate training in some other discipline. Exceptional students with a degree in some other field may be admitted on the condition that they complete a set of upper-division courses to be determined in consultation with the faculty. These courses may be in addition to those required in the graduate program.

The Philosophy department receives from 40-45 applications each year and offers admission to 6-10 of those students.

The Philosophy Department accepts applications for the fall quarter only. The deadline for 2008-09 was January 15, 2008. The application process is done online at: https://apply.embark.com/Grad/UCSantaCruz/. A complete application will contain a completed application form, official transcripts, GRE scores, TOEFL scores (for international students coming from a non-English speaking country), a statement of purpose, a writing sample, three letters of recommendation, and a $60 fee (paid online).

Fees
All graduate students pay quarterly registration fees; those who are not California residents also pay nonresident tuition. (California residency is established after one year; the usual way to establish residency is to apply for a California driver’s license.) The university makes a strong effort to provide financial support to graduate students who are making normal progress in their program of studies. Teaching assistantships and graduate student researcherships are administered by the departments; fellowships and grants, by the Division of Graduate Studies (based on the recommendations of the departments); and student loans, by the Financial Aid Office.

Financial Aid
U.S. citizens and permanent residents should submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, since many UCSC fellowships and grants are only awarded to students who have completed it. (If you are admitted, you will receive a FAFSA form from UCSC along with your offer of admission. Please note, however, that international applicants are not eligible for need-based financial aid.)

There are a limited number of various fellowships available to entering students through the Division of Graduate Studies, and some also available to continuing students. (See their webpage for more information, http://www2.ucsc.edu/graddiv/aid/#.)

Upon acceptance into the Ph.D. Philosophy program, the department strives to provide financial support for up to five years for Ph.D. students, provided they remain in good standing. The University has a four-year limit for TA support, but advanced students may be hired as teaching fellows.

M.A. students are admitted without the guarantee of support but the department is often able to offer those students Teaching Assistantships as well.

Students are normally supported by Teaching Assistantships but there are other funding opportunities for continuing graduate students, among them doctoral student sabbatical fellowships, dissertation fellowships, and modest research and travel awards. Advanced students are also eligible to teach summer session courses.
