Course Requirements:
1. Attend a minimum of three qualifying colloquia sponsored by the Philosophy
Department.
The Philosophy Department
colloquia are usually announced by email to the standard Philosophy
Department email list and posted on the Philosophy Department's web site and
outside the Philosophy Department office.
You are responsible for
finding out the time and location of the colloquia.
Not all colloquia that the Philosophy Department is involved with qualify for
the Colloquia Course.
In order to get credit for attending, you will need to sign your
name on a list that the instructor will have. The instructor will have the
sheet available for signing during the break. If due to some unforeseen
emergency the instructor is unable to attend, someone else will have the sign-in
sheet (if an announcement is not made, ask a faculty member who has the
sheet).
It is the student's responsibility to find the instructor (or whoever has the
sheet) and sign it; you will not be given credit for attending a talk if you
do not
sign the sheet.
It is the student's responsibility to attend at least 3 talks; any less than
this and the student may fail the class. Talks will normally be held on
Thursdays from 5-7 pm, but may be held on other days.
No incompletes will be given for lack of attendance at talks.
Students are encouraged to go to talks early in the quarter; in past years
some students have waited until the last minute and have been unable to
attend three talks.
2. Write three short 1-2 page typewritten papers about three of the
colloquia.
These papers should
consist of your thoughts about the talk and discussion.
You should be able to explain part of the talk and give your reaction to it.
You might explain why you agree, or disagree, with the speaker, or discuss
some questions you have about the talk.
If there are any questions about the papers, please see the instructor.
These papers need to be turned in by 5 p.m. on
the last day of classes (before finals), along with a cover sheet that contains
your name, the colloquia you
attended, and the colloquia your papers are on.
Graduate students should speak to the instructor about additional
requirements for graduate students.
If you have any questions, please contact the instructor, Paul Roth, at 459-2191
or paroth@ucsc.edu.
