ABSTRACT

"The Mexican 68: History and memory"

History and memory are two fields of our relation with the past, which may propose different readings of one same event because their objectives and forms of representation of the past are not the same. In this talk I will approach the relationships between the readings of the student movement of 1968 in Mexico coming from history and memory. As opposed to the diverse interpretations that, from its very beginnings, the social actors have imposed on the Mexican 68 (from the initial “conspiracy” construal suggested by the government of Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, to the “beginning of the fight for democracy” idea in recent years), what interpretation is proposed by the historical discipline? The aim is to make an exercise of reflection based on an empirical case, which may allow us to come to a better understanding of the tense interactions between memory and history.
